Assessing the Landscape of ESG Factors and Sustainable Development in Pakistan: Opportunities and Challenges

Abstract

Purpose – This paper considers the landscape of ESG factors and sustainable development in Pakistan, in the backdrop of increasing global demands to incorporate the environmental, social, and governance criteria into the business practices. Design/methodology/approach – Concluding insights were found using thematic analysis in addition to qualitative inquiry through interviews and focus group discussions with 50 participants. Findings – The result of this research provides a solution as well as points out the future direction for the integration of ESG in the Pakistani context, which is useful for an understanding of the context that is different from the developed countries in terms of socio-economic development and environmental conditions. Research limitations/implications –The implications of this study provide a rich and country-level understanding of the potential and challenges of ESG integration in the context of Pakistan and practical suggestions for future research and policy implications that may help policymakers, organizations, and stakeholders to effectively prosecute sustainable development goals in the country. Originality/value – The rationale for this study is embedded in the critical need to comprehend and increase the incorporation of ESG aspects in Pakistan.
